Nairobi governor Mike Sonko’s administration has been accused of frustrating crucial county programmes by a new report by The National Taxpayers Association (NTA).
Speaking during the launch of the report attended by Nairobi stakeholders, NTA national Coordinator Irene Otieno stated that most programmes in the county had stalled since Sonko took over from Former Nairobi Governor, Evans Kidero.
The programmes included rehabilitation of schools construction of roads, construction of modern markets, stalls and health facilities.
Other projects were the installation of street lights, construction of ward administrators’ offices and the construction of the education facilities among others.
According to the report, lack of effective public participation in the county projects was aiding corruption and poor public service delivery.
Furthermore, NTA added that some projects had been poorly implemented in a clear scheme to swindle taxpayers’ funds.
“In fact, citizens failed to identify themselves with the projects being implemented by the county government. The county should involve them at every stage of the project implementation to enhance the project effectiveness and ownership,” Otieno remarked.
She further stated that the report painted a grim picture on the status of implementation of projects and called on the county to improve the badly implemented projects and complete all stalled/ abandoned projects.
The association also wanted the information on county projects availed at the lowest level possible for easy supervision and monitoring.
"The locals know what they want. And they also know how it should be implemented to serve them better," the NTA national Coordinator commented.
