Ex-Govt Official Who Spent Kshs 41M in 10 Months Despite 180K Salary

Stanley Mombo Amuti appeared before the Court of Appeal on January 22, 2018, seeking to reverse a ruling that saw EACC freeze his accounts over his suspicious spending habits.

Mombo caught the attention of the EACC after they noticed that his spending habits in 10 months, within the period of September 1, 2007, and  June 26, 2008, did not seem to match his salary.

EACC told the Court of Appeal that Mombo spent Kshs41 million within the 10 months to purchase luxury vehicles and prime pieces of land.

On one occasion, the former government official took 15 trips to the ATM, depositing Kshs 100,000 in each trip.

On another instance when the EACC detectives raided his house, they recovered Kshs4 million in cash.

EACC also told the court that he could not account for the source of his wealth.

In his defense, Mombo, through his lawyer, argued that he was not required to explain how he acquired the Kshs41 million.

He also argued that it was unfair for EACC to freeze his assets, arguing that he had not been arraigned in court for any graft charges.

The case between EACC and Mombo has been ongoing since 2010.

The next hearing is set for May 10, 2019.
