Police Speak About Arrest of Al Shabaab Bride, Violet Kemunto

The police has come out to refute claims that Violet Kemunto the wife of Ali Gichunge, who is believed to have masterminded the attack on Dusit Complex, was arrested at dawn on Friday.

Some media reports had indicated that Kemunto was finally arrested after it emerged that dozens of police raided a couple’s house at Mavindi market in Makueni County.

However, the County Police Commander Joseph Napeiyan confirmed to journalists that Kemunto was yet to be arrested.

Napeiyan explained that after hours of questioning at the county headquarters, the arrested couple was found out to be traders.

Nonetheless, sources suspected that the misidentified couple could have been terrorists since they remained indoors most of the time.

Speaking to The Nation, a boda-boda operator within the area disclosed that the couple had rented the self-contained house on January 16, a day after the Dusit attack.

On the other hand, the landlord of the house who is also a head teacher of a local school, stated that the arrest caught him by surprise.

“I did background checks before allowing them to rent the house and was satisfied they were clean. They were referred to me by a taxi driver, “ Stephen Ngwili told the publication.

Initially, reports had indicated that Kemunto escaped into Somalia and had become the most wanted person by  the police.

On January 18, while speaking to the press about Kemunto's whereabouts, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss George Kinoti proclaimed, “She can run, but she won’t hide".

Elsewhere on Thursday, the courts detained Zipporah Wambui Karanja, an insurance agent, who sold insurance for the vehicle used by one of the attackers.

So far eight people believed to have communicated with the terror suspects before the attack have been arrested.
