Michael Khateli, the photographer who took a photo of President Uhuru with mouth agape at the sight of a bottle of champagne, has turned his son into a popular meme.
Speaking to a local radio station, Khateli revealed that his inspiration to turn his son, Malao, was born out of boredom.
“When the year was starting, our domestic manager was on leave and my wife was at work. So, it was just the two of us, me and Malao at home,” he commented.
According to Khateli, Malao’s photos have gone viral to a point where his friend from Dubai reached out to tell him about the meme.
“A friend of mine in Dubai, told me there is one she saw in a mothers’ WhatsApp group. The meme in question is the one of the Domestic manager not showing up after January 4,” he shared.
He explained that he would keep him pre-occupied throughout the day which would later make him sleep easily after the “hectic” shoots.
Khateli claimed that despite the photos being more personal, he wouldn’t mind if people shared the photos without asking.
He revealed that his wife was okay with it and even had some favorites.
The photographer stated that he aspired to create memes that resonated with the daily mood and day to day happenings of people.
In 2016, Khateli captured the president when his face lit up as he was presented with the bottle of French champagne G. H. Mumm, a limited edition which was packaged in a three-liter bottle that retailed at close to Ksh 70 000 per bottle.
As soon as the photos were released online, Kenyans wasted no time in creating funny memes and jokes using it.
