Jetlak Foods Limited Responds to Accusations of Aflatoxin in Nuteez Peanut Butter

A letter making rounds on social media and seen by Kenyans.co.ke claims that Nuteez peanut butter, manufactured by Ruiru-based Jetlak Foods Limited, has high levels of aflatoxin.

The alleged report cited a certificate of analysis issued by the Government Chemist on Thursday indicating that the peanut butter contained 24.08ppb aflatoxin, which is 14.08ppb more than the required limit.

The existence of high levels of aflatoxin poisonous carcinogens in food products implies that they are not fit for human consumption.

In a statement seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the manufacturer indicated that they only learned of the development through information on social media.

The company, however, launched investigations into the matter as soon as it came to the attention of the management.

The Managing Director, Anup Bid, indicated, “We wish to reassure our esteemed customers that Jetlak prescribes to the highest standards of quality and we remain committed to manufacturing the best quality products.”

Regarding the citation of the Government Chemist, Jetlak communicated that it was yet to receive any formal communication from the government (Ministry of Interior) or any of its agencies.

It also informed that it has issued an official statement on its social media handle to elaborate its position on the matter.

Peanut and peanut products are easily susceptible to fungus and molds that are toxic in high levels, making them unfit for human consumption.

Aflatoxin, a carcinogen, is produced by a fungus known as "Aspergillus flavus" and is highly poisonous.

The carcinogens are associated with the development of several diseases such as aflatoxicosis. They are also poisonous to both humans and domestic animals.
