The High Court in Narok was unable to continue with proceedings of a case where a Chinese man is accused of murdering his countryman and critically injuring his wife.
Justice Justus Bwonwong`a, the resident judge of the Narok court was presiding over the case on Wednesday but there was no interpreter to help in communication.
The public prosecution, via its senior assistant director Zachary Omwega applied for the adjournment of the case on the grounds that there was no one available to translate the proceedings of the court to the suspect Li Chanquing in the Mandarin language that is spoken in China.
Omwega informed the court that they had scheduled for a translator to be present but the individual was unexpectedly held up with other issues that emerged, which made him unable to leave Nairobi.
Judge Bwonwong`a was forced to hear the concerns of the prosecution and schedule a later date for the case.
The case will be heard on February 18 and 19 when the interpreter will be available.
The suspect Chanquing, 45, is charged with murdering Jinli Liu, 45, on August 8, 2018.
The two individuals met at the Keekorok Lodge within the Maasai Mara National Game Reserve together with the wife of the deceased.
Charges against him indicate that he allegedly stabbed the Chinese couple over a disagreement on a seating arrangement. He accused them of taking his table.
Chanquing is out on a Ksh 1 million bond with a surety of a similar amount. The court, however, has custody of his passport.
If he is found guilty, the Chinese national will face the death penalty as stipulated by law for the capital offence.
