Joseph Ogutu, who was the driver of Zambian ambassador and another diplomat, was not picked up by the Kenya Airforce that airlifted his fellow accident victims to Nairobi for specialized treatment on Wednesday.
The three were victims of an accident that occurred at Lukenya Bridge along Mombasa-Nairobi Highway on Tuesday, February 26, and were all admitted at the Machakos County Hospital.
Among the persons that soon arrived at the hospital after the news was Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua.
Governor Mutua was quick to wish the Zambian High Commissioner to Kenya Ms Brenda Muntemba and the other diplomat Kama Wasa a quick recovery in Nairobi.
Ambulances escorted the diplomats from the hospital to Machakos Stadium where the KDF helicopter was waiting for them.
Officials were keen to ensure the operation was carried out as fast as possible over concern of a scheduled match between football clubs Gor Mahia and Tusker, wherein the former won over the latter by 1-0.
Ms Muntemba and Wasa were part of four diplomats that were involved in the accident.
The other envoys in a separate vehicle were the High Commissioner of Botswana to Kenya Duke Lephoko and his driver, both of whom sustained minor injuries and were discharged from hospital soon after.
A previous message by Governor Mutua about the Zambian diplomats indicated, “They’ve undergone major abdominal surgeries undertaken by Senior Dr. Joab Osumba, Dr. Eliud Aluvala & anaesthetist J. Mutunga.”
Kenyans, however, questioned why the driver, who was the man on the wheel in the vehicle carrying the Zambian diplomats, was left behind yet they were involved in the same accident.
Kenyans.co.ke, however, managed to get a hold of Governor Mutua on Thursday, who indicated that the reason the driver was left behind was that his condition was not critical compared to the situation of the Zimbabwean diplomats.
