Citizen TV's Mike Okinyi Appointed to World Under-20 Athletics Championships Organizing Committee

Citizen TV journalist Mike Okinyi, was on Friday, appointed the Media, Broadcasting and Communication Director for the 2020 World Under-20 Athletics Championships by Rashid Echesa before the CS's unceremonious sacking.

In a gazette notice that served as Echesa's final appointment before his firing, Okinyi will be deputised by Sports Journalists’ Association of Kenya (SJAK) President Chris Mbaisi

The two are part of the organising committee appointed following the successful bid by Kenya to host the 2020 International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Under 20 Championships.

"They will be members of the steering committee effective from the 1st January, 2019 for a period of one year and eight months," the notice by Echesa read.

Also in the board are General Jackson Tuwei (Chairman), Michael Agwingi Rabar (Chief Executive Officer), Mary Mwaki (Assistant Chief Executive Officer), Regina Gachora (Chief Operations Officer).

"The function of the steering committee shall be to offer the best high-level organizational standards for hosting the world championships in Nairobi: Policy decisions for Government of Kenya, and review the health of the championships at each stage of the lifecycle," Echesa stated.

According to the gazette notice, activities of the Organizing Committee (OC) shall be funded through the regular Government Budget on a grant basis.

In July 2018, the IAAF council formally endorsed Nairobi as the host city of the 2020 IAAF World U20 Championships.

"By hosting an outstanding final edition of the IAAF World U18 Championships in 2017, Nairobi demonstrated its readiness to take the next step as a championship host," the world sports body noted.

Moreover, the IAAF president Sebastian Coe noted the Kenyan Government’s strong support for the Nairobi bid concluding it would be an ideal host for the championships.
