DP Ruto Attacked Over Outdated Computers at Project Launch

Deputy President William Ruto received backlash over a photo of him launching an ICT Resource centre that had obsolete computers.

The DP had on Saturday visited Sambirir Girls Secondary School in Marakwet East Constituency to open the facility.

The photo showed that Ruto who was accompanied by Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen and the school's officials inspecting a computer lab that had very old machines.

Netizens were angry that Ksh18 million had been used in the project, yet the computers were not up to date.

"Why did you buy CRT monitors in the age of TFTs? These computers I bet are Pentium 3 at least. Where did you collect them?" wondered Vincent Wangosho.

A section of netizens were of the opinion that Ruto had launched a computer museum instead of an ICT centre.

"Ruto is touching the computer with the tips of his fingers because they are too dusty for his liking. The computer is also without a keyboard someone must have stolen it," observed John Mautta.

Senator Mukomen, however, clarified to Kenyans.co.ke that the plan was to face out the old models and replace them with newer ones.

"We raised Ksh18 million for equipping the center by purchasing new computers to replace the obsolete ones, purchase new books and complete ongoing construction of the dormitory," explained Murkomen.

The center was funded through joint efforts by the Ministry of Education and the National Government CDF in Marakwet East.
