Another Safe Box With 70kg Fake Gold in Bank Seized

Barclays Queensway hit headlines for the second day in a row after the bomb squad was called in when a suspicious package was discovered in a safe deposit box.

The bomb squad arrived a few minutes after Director of Criminal Investigation (DCI) George Kinoti left having spent hours investigating how the bank management let the suspects stash un-inspected cargo in the safe deposit boxes.

He also demanded an explanation on why the bank was letting safe deposit box holders to use the privacy of the vault to con unsuspecting Kenyans.

The bomb squad emerged from the bank with a box weighing 70kg, which they went to open at a safe location to avoid casualties in any eventuality. They later confirmed that it contained fake gold.

On Tuesday, flying squad officers had seized fake cash amounting to Ksh2 billion in US dollars and six people arrested.

Those in custody include the owner of the safe box Dr. Erick Odede, Ahmed Shah, Elizabeth Muthoni and Irene Wairimu Kimani.

Two bank officials, Boaz Ochich and Charles Manzi, were also arrested in connection with the case, all the six are expected in court to face various charges.

Head of flying squad Musa Yego appealed to anyone who may have fallen victim to the gang of cons to record a statement at their Nairobi offices.

Those who have come forward already claimed to have lost over Ksh5.5 million.

As reported by Daily Nation, Tuesday's bust was triggered after the bank manager informed DCI of suspicious activity when he was about to transfer Ksh10 million from the account of a manager in a top company who was to be swindled.
