Opposition Leader Raila Odinga on Tuesday castigated Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro for sponsoring a Bill that will cut the powers of the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) as well as the Office of Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).
Speaking during the launch of Huduma Namba in Likoni, Mombasa, he stated that the MP was dragging Kenya behind on the war against corruption.
The former Premier started his attack by expressing concern that Kenya featured prominently on the Global Corruption Index by Transparency International.
"Saa zile tunataka kutoa Kenya [kwa hiyo orodha] , mwingine anafanya kazi ya bure, mbunge, ati anakwenda kuleta sheria ya kupunguza uwezo ya wale wamepewa jukumu ya kupigana na ufisadi (While we are trying to remove Kenya from the Global Corruption Index, this MP is labouring in vain by sponsoring a bill to reduce the powers of those mandated to fight corruption)," Raila stated.
"Huyo Mbunge akili yake ni timamu? Akili yake ni timamu kweli? Si ameshikwa na wenda wazimu huyo? (Is that MP sane. Is he sane? Hasn't he gone mad?)" Odinga posed to the crowd.
Odinga was clearly astonished by the timing of Nyoro's bill when the anti-graft war had picked momentum.
The ODM leader also questioned why the lawmaker would sponsor such legislation yet he was not under investigation.
Odinga ended his attack by advising Nyoro that if he was afraid of being exposed for corruption, he should just present himself to authorities.
The Anti-Corruption Laws (Amendment) Bill, if passed into law, will restrict the powers of the DCI and DPP to only investigating and prosecuting criminal matters respectively.
All corruption cases will be handled by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) which still does not have prosecution powers.
