Sonko Announces Hospital Bills Waiver for Nairobians

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko on Sunday announced a major hospital bill waiver for the county residents.

Speaking during the commemoration of the Good Deeds Day, Sonko ordered the immediate release of all patients held in Nairobi county hospitals over pending medical bills.

Sonko was speaking at City Hall where he was accompanied by the Israel Deputy ambassador Eyal David.

"As a good gesture, I am directing my CECs of Health and Finance to devise ways of covering the costs of patients held at our medical facilities due to lack of fees.

"I am therefore ordering the immediate and non- conditional discharge of the patients at Mbagathi and at Mama Lucy Hospitals. The outstanding debt for all of them is just over Ksh1 million," Sonko directed.

The Nairobi boss indicated that the county would host the Good Deeds Africa Regional Conference in August.

"You are all invited. I wish to encourage organisations involved with volunteerism to come and share their successes, challenges and lessons learnt, in order to promote volunteering in Kenya.

"I also urge the private sector to embrace Good Deeds because, as they say, 'Doing good is good business'," Sonko added.

The waiver for the county hospitals comes days after Kenyatta National Hospital which falls under the national government made a similar move.

Following, the numerous cases of patients and bodies held up at the facility, the management was forced to waiver the bills for over 200 patients.
