Mother of 5 Babies' Autopsy Reveals Cause of Death

Evelyn Namukhula, a mother who delivered five babies in March, died on Saturday evening at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital and the cause of her death has been revealed.

An autopsy conducted at the hospital on Monday disclosed that Namukhula died of peripartum cardiomyopathy, a heart condition that affects women after delivery.

Benson Macharia, a pathologist, stated there was fluid on the mother's chest, heart, lungs and abdominal cavity, indicators that were consistent with the heart condition.

"We began by looking at the history of the medical history of the deceased because it was important in establishing the cause of death, we ruled out blood clots but we established that her heart was mildly enlarged," Macharia told The Standard.

The pathologist added that samples had been taken for further analysis, adding that the full results would be out in two weeks.

The family is requesting the government to help give a respectable send off to Namukhula and her two children who had died earlier.

Khassim Khalelecha, Namukhula's father, stated they were peasant farmers who could not afford to cater for the burial and still raise the children.

"We have no resources to transport her body from Eldoret to Kakamega for the burial," he stated.

On Monday, Embakasi East MP, Babu Owino, stated he would offer support to the family.

"I commit to supporting her family during this trying time. We will do our best to ensure that her surviving children are looked after," he asserted in his Facebook post.

The deceased is survived by her husband and seven children.
