Cheeky Kenyan Pranks Whole Matatu With Fake Arrest

A cheeky Kenyan on Monday successfully pranked passengers in a matatu after he made a fake call about an ongoing crackdown on traffic offenders.

The individual had boarded a matatu plying the Waiyaki Way route and called a friend he was supposed to meet asking about his whereabouts.

The passenger then acted shocked to find out that his friend had been arrested near ABC place, for not wearing his seat belt and needed Ksh 1,000 to secure his release.

"Ati umeshikwa tena? Juu ya mshipi? Wanaitisha elfu moja? Wacha nikutumie saa hii (You've been arrested for not wearing a seatbelt? They are asking for Ksh 1,000? Let me send it to you now)," the passenger pretended to converse.

On hearing about the crackdown ahead, the rest of the passengers in the PSV started scrambling to wear their belts.

When the video went viral, the man received praise for using the practical joke to enforce traffic rules.

The prank also exposed a fatal flaw that a lot of Kenyans are known to possess.

"This shows we are the problem... we don't want to wear seatbelts but cry when people die on roads," a Twitter user called Maina noted.

“Kenyans need to realize that buckling up is not for the cops or so that they’re not fined; it’s for their own safety,” advised Ann Lemayian.

During a crackdown that was conducted in November 2018, Kenyans had gotten used to obeying traffic regulations but over time, the consistency has died down.
