Skydiving Suspended in Diani After Soldier Falls From Sky

The Coastal Regional Security Committee on Tuesday announced the suspension of all skydiving activities in Ukunda town, Kwale county following the death of a Zambian soldier - David Pumulo, in March 2019.

The security committee also claimed that the British entrepreneur-a former British military officer, who ran the Diani sky diving expeditions was actually operating without proper documentation.

"All skydiving expedition has been suspended over security challenges as we await further directions from the national government," Coast Regional Commissioner John Elungata revealed to The Standard.

He added that the Briton was at a high risk of facing deportation following the tragic incident as well as allegations of the illegality of his operations.

"He had no license to practice skydiving at all. When we pressed him he alleged to have a verbal agreement with legal authorities," Mr Elungata divulged.

Following the tragic death of Mr Pumulo last month, a diplomatic row ensued between Kenya and Zambia when 14 Zambians (Mr Pumulo among them) entered Kenya on a tourist visa but ended up engaging in skydiving over Diani.

However, in a recent twist, Kenyan officials claimed that the Zambians had made their way into the country illegally.

Security sources at the coastal town revealed that Mr Pumulo plummeted to his death after his diving gear got entangled with his colleagues' at 12,000 feet above sea level.

They managed to disentangle themselves from each other but Pumulo's parachute failed to open leading him to his untimely and gruesome death.

He was declared dead upon arrival at Diani hospital with reports indicating a crushed skull as well as massive internal bleeding.
