Boy With Leukemia Dies After Meeting Bone Marrow Donor

Ivan Obade, a boy who was receiving leukemia treatment at the Mater Hospital died on Monday, days after meeting his sister who was to be his bone marrow donor.

The 15-year-old died at the hospital's Intensive Care Unit while undergoing treatment.

According to a story done by NTV's Eunice Omollo, the boy needed an urgent bone marrow transplant which was meant to treat the blood cancer.

For two years, the family had been looking for Obade's long lost sister, Alice Auma, whom they believed was the best match for the transplant.

However, their search had not been successful until Saturday when Auma came back home.

The two siblings were orphaned and lived with their aunt, Mary Achieng before Auma escaped from their home.

"I did not expect that such a thing would happen, I felt guilty because I did not know he was that sick but I still had hope that he would be well," a teary Auma narrated.

Obade's colleagues at St.Maria Children Center were saddened by the death having lived with him for the past six months.

"He used to teach me things that I was finding hard to understand in school and if he also did not understand, he would tell me to ask someone else," Mugambi, a child at the school stated.

Obade's family is preparing for his burial at their home in Mukuru.
