The Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) is pursuing 7 sitting governors over public finance mismanagement and fraudulent acquisition of public property.
Speaking during the 4th Annual Devolution Legislative Summit in Kisumu, (EACC) director for Preventive Services Vincent Okong’o indicated that there is incriminating evidence to charge a number of current and former governors in corruption-related charges.
According to People Daily, those under active investigation according to the publication include Samburu Governor Moses Lenolkulal over Ksh2 billion, Okoth Obado (Migori) and Sospeter Ojaamong' (Busia).
Others include Alfred Mutua (Machakos), Martin Wambora (Embu), Cyprian Awiti (Homa Bay), and Mwangi wa Iria (Murang’a).
Former governors including Evans Kidero (Nairobi), Samuel Ragwa (Tharaka-Nithi), Nathif Jama (Garissa) and Godana Doyo (Isiolo).
Quoting Okong’o, People Daily indicated that up to 20 sitting and former governors would soon be arrested and arraigned.
In what is set to be a game-changer in the war against corruption, EACC is reportedly investigating at least 227 MCAs for various omissions and unethical behaviour.
The MCAs are being investigated over various crimes including conflict of interest, fabrication of documents and dishonourable conduct.
"MCAs are unable to do their oversight role because they have interest in doing business with the county executives," Okong’o noted.
EACC indicated that graft was flourishing in both county executives and county assemblies owing to the weak systems put in place, and poor record keeping.
"They don’t have ownership documents and they do not know whether some of their assets and liabilities exist," the EACC boss noted.
Besides, county executives reportedly collude with ward representatives to loot and swindle public resources.
EACC is now proposing an amendment to the law to give the commission powers to monitor wealth declaration digitally.
