Babu Owino’s Ultimatum After Raila, Uhuru China Visit

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, on Saturday, took to Twitter to deliver a tirade after President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga’s visit to China failed to secure the SGR loan.

According to the controversial MP, the famous handshake between Uhuru and Raila was meaningless if it was not able to deliver anything substantial.

“I’m smelling a rat. The by-product of this Handshake must be a referendum to amend the constitution, or we divorce if the marriage can’t manufacture a baby,” part of his tweet read.

Owino declared that if the details of the handshake are not made clear by the end of 2019, something had to give.

“Everything must be clear by the end of this year. Ujinga hatutakubali na ufala ya peni mbili ( we wont accept any nonsense),” he tweeted.

This comes in the wake of President Kenyatta's trip to China accompanied by Odinga seeking a Ksh368 Billion loan from China to extend the SGR to Kisumu.

Raila, who is also the African Union special envoy on infrastructure had expressed confidence that the Chinese government would lend Kenya the money.

However, according to reports, China did not agree to the terms of the loan that the president was proposing.

Reports indicate that Uhuru had asked for half of the money to be given as a grant and the balance be issued as a loan with more relaxed conditions.

The Chinese instead insisted on “sufficient proof of viability” before they could authorise the deal to construct the standard gauge railway beyond Naivasha.

At the wake of March 9, 2018, Kenyans woke to "life-changing" news through a rather unexpected event.

News that the key leaders, Raila Odinga, and Uhuru Kenyatta, who were at the helm of the divisive politics and hurling insults at each other were putting their differences aside and uniting through a "Handshake".
