There was drama in Mombasa on Sunday after a hearse driver offloaded a coffin and left it on the streets.
The Standard reports that the casket was carrying the body of Anthony Kioko who passed away after battling brain cancer.
Kioko was a tomato vendor and he had worked near the Likoni Ferry area for five years.
His family had hired the hearse to transport his body from Coast General Hospital mortuary to Vanga, a small suburb in the outskirts of Mombasa.
According to the publication, the driver charged the family Ksh 16,000 and the money was handed to him before the start of the journey.
All was well until the hearse crossed the Likoni Channel. When it got to the other side of the ocean, it was stopped by vendors who wanted to view Kioko's body.
However, this did not sit well with the driver of the hearse.
He claimed that his program had been interfered with. Moments later, he offloaded the coffin and drove off.
The vendors, who had worked with Kioko and contributed money to hire the hearse, were not pleased with his actions.
They explained that they wanted to view his body because most of them didn't have the means to attend the burial.
