Journalist Who Was Entrusted With Breaking Jomo Kenyatta's Death on TV

Details have emerged about a '70s journalist who aced the Queen's language mastery to a point he was entrusted with breaking the news about founding President Jomo Kenyatta's death.

According to Standard DigitalNorbert Vincent Okare was a top-notch journalist who read English service news with ease and comfort.

So good was his voice and delivery that when Mzee Jomo Kenyatta died on August 22, 1978, he was tasked with broadcasting the death of the first Kenyan president and the clip was played on and on for emphasis.

Okare was so splendid that former minister and Attorney General Charles Njonjo admitted to listening exclusively to Okare in the English division because “Only Norbert reads it in English”.

But with all that glory in the news business, Okare only did it as a part-time job.

Okare had a strong British accent and booming voice and belonged to the high-class members of the society mingling with the who is who of his era.

He had his own company known as Afri Limited which was located at Utalii House in Nairobi and served as Chairman of the Pan African Advertising Union as well as the director at Safari Park Hotel.

Before commanding the country's airwaves, Okare had his stint with sea waves while he worked as a sailor with numerous cruise ships across the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

His death in 1994 was tragic when he passed on following a car accident along the Nakuru-Kericho road.

Okare never married, neither did he sire any children of his own.
