The Kenya Railways, on Friday, announced a raft of changes to the Madaraka Express train aimed at improving the passenger service.
Among the changes which are set to take effect on June 1 include the children’s fares, which have been increased by 100 percent.
According to the Kenya Railway website, minors above three years will now pay full fare and will be required to indicate the parent’s or guardian’s National ID or passport.
If traveling alone, they will be required to present a copy of the parent’s/guardian’s ID or passport.
The minors currently pay Ksh 1,500 for first class and Ksh 500 for economy class tickets which have now been increased to Ksh 3,000 and Ksh 1,000 respectively.
Furthermore, passengers will now be able to select their preferred seats online during the booking and in addition to M-Pesa, they will be allowed to pay for their seats using credit/debit cards.
The advance booking window has also been extended from 30 days to 60 days.
Passengers found traveling with an invalid ticket or without a ticket shall pay full fare for Nairobi to Mombasa, with an additional 30 percent penalty.
Rescheduling will attract a fee of 10 percent of the ticket price and the ticket shall only be rescheduled once.
No refunds shall be made to damaged tickets while all refunds shall be subject to a 30 percent fee of the ticket price.
Request for refund shall be accepted 48 and 72 hours before the time of travel for individuals and groups respectively.
