Kakamega Gang Kills 10 in Cold Blood During Month of Terror

A pregnant lady and her 3-year-old daughter were hacked to death on Sunday night by members of a killer gang that has been terrorizing residents of Sayangwe village, Matungu sub-county, Kakamega, over the past few months.

Reports by the Standard revealed that a gang of four men armed to the teeth with machetes and all sorts of crude weapons stormed the house of Petronila Mungayi as she slept alongside her husband, Stephen Rabuochi, and two daughters aged nine and three respectively.

They then proceeded to rain terror on the helpless family with Ms Mungayi (who was pregnant at the time) hacked to death on the spot.

The gang then turned their attention on the rest of the family, battering them and leaving them for dead before disappearing into the darkness as quickly as they came.

Ms Mungayi's youngest daughter succumbed to her injuries while receiving treatment at the Matungu Sub-county hospital while her husband and eldest daughter are battling for their lives at the Kakamega County Referral Hospital.

The county's governor, Wycliffe Oparanya, and Member of Parliament (MP), Justus Murunga demanded the immediate transfer of all police officers based in the area as the latest gruesome killing was the 10th in just under a month by the same gang going by the name 42 Brothers.

"We have agreed that all the police officers stationed in Matungu will be replaced by a new team by Tuesday morning," a startled Oparanya disclosed to the local residents.

The locals had blocked the Busia-Bungoma highway in protest over the reign of terror experienced in the area and lack of police protection.

Also present during the governor's address, County Commissioner, Abdiruzak Jaldesa, vowed to heighten security operations and patrols within the area.

Reports by the police revealed that the locals had recently lynched a suspected member of the notorious gang which is said to operate in the dead of the night.

Six night guards were killed in Emuhaya during the month of March, with four slaughtered in Khwisero. Butere, on the other hand, has seen more than 14 people killed between September last year and January this year at the hands of the same gang.
