Things went from bad to worse for the search party that was trying to retrieve the body of grade two pupil who had been killed and dragged into Lake Victoria by a crocodile on Sunday.
A 23-year-old man who was among the fishermen that had responded to calls for help in the body search accidentally slid off his boat and fell into the water and drowned.
God Nyasumbi Primary School pupil, Kenedy Onyango, 9, was at the shore washing clothes in the company of his friends and was attacked by the reptile that was hiding in the nearby waters.
County Beach Management Units Networks Chairman Edward Oremo revealed that the fishermen responded with speed in a bid to retrieve the 9-year-old boy from the jaws of the crocodile.
It is then that tragedy struck for the second time as Anthony Odila who was using a boat to search for the child slipped into the water and drowned.
“He was trying to paddle the boat to return back to the shore. It is not clear how he fell off the boat,” Oremo stated.
The mission to search for the minor's body quickly turned to the search of two bodies.
On Sunday evening, the fishermen were able to retrieve the body of their colleague but could not find the minor.
Homa Bay Directorate of Criminal Investigations boss Daniel Wachira reported that the body of the minor had not been found by Monday morning.
Daily Nation indicated that area residents were calling on the Kenya Wildlife Service to erect barriers around the lake to control the movement of crocodiles and other harmful water creatures.
