DPP Prosecutor Imprisoned For Soliciting Bribes

Wajir Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Carey Francis Andai, was on Monday sentenced to serve a 12-month jail term after he was caught soliciting for a bribe.

Mr Andai was arrested following complaints by businessman Mohamed Muhamud that the prosecutor had demanded for a Ksh 35,000 bribe in order for his case to be heard.

Mr Muhamud was in pursuit of justice for his daughter, who he claimed was assaulted by known assailants.

However, the prosecutor allegedly claimed that the case would be thrown out if the victim didn't cough up the money he had asked for in full.

Pushed to the wall, Mr Mohamed then sent out his letter to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), who disclosed to The Standard that his was one of many similar complaints made against the prosecutor.

EACC detectives headed over to Wajir where they set up a sting operation in order to nab Mr Andai pants down.

Playing the role of a victim in need of the prosecutor's services, one of the detectives made his move.

After hearing out the victim's case, Mr Andai demanded an upfront cash payment of Ksh 30,000 in order for his case to be pushed ahead of the rest.

The undercover detective handed him the money after treating it with some top-secret marker which they used as an identifier when they made the raid at his house, where they even found more money.

Senior Magistrate, Cosmas Maundu, who presided over the prosecutor's case at a Garissa court also slapped a Ksh 100,000 fine on top of the sentence.
