Public Service, Youth and Gender Affairs Cabinet Secretary Margaret Kobia, on Wednesday, stated that the government had created 850,000 jobs every year.
Speaking during the launch of the One Million Youth Challenge launch at the University of Nairobi, the CS stated that a bulk of the jobs had been created in the informal sector.
"Youth should not keep saying there are no jobs. If there are no jobs, ask yourself, 'what can I do?'" she posed.
Her sentiments were, however, met with skepticism from a number of Kenyans online.
"850K jobs my foot. Recycling old and unproductive people who have been loyal to their corrupt masters is not job creation," one user quipped.
Another divulged, "Universities are producing graduates faster than the number of jobs being created in the formal sector annually while many companies are laying off workers."
Others were of the opinion that the economy was not favourable for youth businesses.
"When they do ask 'what can I do' and set up a hustle, we have government bodies killing the small scale start ups faster than they can rise. Just ask the business men of downtown," one Kenyan noted.
Earlier on in March, Kobia disclosed that the government had established the Kenya Youth Employment Program targetting 280,000 youth for 5 years.
"The program's goal is to reach out to the youth who have up to form 4 education, primary education/ drop-outs.
"As a government, the youth issue takes a central stage in terms of development. Vision 2030 aims at making Kenyan youth industrialized, having high-quality life that sustains economic growth of 10% by the year 2030," she explained.
