A mega prayer rally that was scheduled to take place at Kenol, Muranga County on May 11 has been called off again at the last minute.
The organising Bishops had told journalists that Deputy President William Ruto would be the chief guest and would be accompanied by over 70 MPs to launch the Murang’a Church Sacco.
The event has however been called off even as David Mugonyi who is the DP's Spokesperson stated that the rally was not on Ruto's weekend schedule.
"As far as we are concerned, the diary of the Deputy President has nothing like that set for Saturday. We are not aware of the function,” Mugonyi told the media.
Sources close to the organisers told The Standard that President Uhuru Kenyatta may have had a hand in the cancellation of the event.
Murang'a Woman Representative Sabina Chege stated that the rising political temperatures may have caused the last minute cancellation.
“Since the meeting could be seen to antagonise President Uhuru Kenyatta, it was postponed to a day that would be communicated. Although there was no such an agenda, people might interpret it in the wrong way,” Chege commented.
Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro who is a staunch supporter of Ruto, however, told Nation that a warning from the weather department forced the cancellation of the meeting.
“We have been cautioned by the Meteorological Department that we shall receive ice rain and it will not be advisable to hold the prayer rally. There is no politics behind the indefinite cancellation of the event and we shall keep the public posted on when to hold the rally,” he stated.
“Praise Jesus, due to unavoidable circumstances, our prayer meeting at Kenol has been postponed until further notice. Please inform other Christians,” read the message from the organisers obtained by The Standard.
The rally had initially been set for April 27 but was postponed to allow the DP, who had been announced as the chief guest, to attend the burial of the late Jonathan Moi.
Although it had been termed as an inter-denominational prayer meeting, the heavy political undertones surrounding preparations for the forum were being interpreted as a public show of solidarity with the DP by the region that is the president’s backyard, and which, in some quarters, was being seen as sending signals of defiance.
