Glaring Inaccuracies in Jeremiah Kiereini's Biography

Many influential politicians who lived to see and participate in the building of the nation after Kenya gained independence, have written memoirs about their experience during those years.

The late Jeremiah Kiereini served as a PS in former President Mzee Jomo Kenyatta's government until former President Daniel Moi appointed him as the Head of Civil Sevice.

He published a biography in 2014 titled: A Daunting Journey which Nation journalist Joyce Nyairo pointed out to have glaring errors.

She noted that whenever Kiereini is narrating events in the book, he starts, “I no longer remember but it went something like …” which makes a reader lose confidence in the contents of the story.

In another instance, the former Defence PS, who was the author, wrote that Uganda's President Milton Obote overthrew General Idi Amin in 1972. He adds that the events in Uganda influenced Kenyan soldiers to attempt a coup the same year.

The problem with this information is that both events happened in 1971.

Further, in the book, a photo was claimed to have been taken outside London Law courts, yet, the Nairobi High Court (what is now the Supreme Court) can be clearly seen in the background.

There are also different accounts by Jeremiah himself on how he was appointed to take over the civil service from his predecessor Geoffrey Kareithi.

He wrote that Moi fired Kareithi but had earlier recalled how the then president kept refusing Kareithi's resignation.

Jeremiah continues to add that he had agreed with Moi to make his promotion public during the 1pm oclock news.

The journalist wondered how Kiereini invited Kareithi for lunch on the same day, well aware that his boss would be the latest victim of Moi's way of announcing sacking during 1pm news.
