NMG's Vincent Opiyo Quits to Become a Priest

Nation Media Group (NMG) sports journalist Vincent Opiyo has bid farewell to the newsroom to fulfill his childhood dream of becoming a priest.

The prolific writer, who joined the media house in 2017, announced his decision in his last article for Sunday Nation on May 19.

Opiyo disclosed that he had decided to pursue priesthood through the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), a Roman Catholic congregation of priests and brothers.

What remains unknown to many people is the 29-year-old has harbored the dream of becoming a priest since he was 12.

“At the age of 12, I became an Altar Boy in my home parish, Nangina Catholic church. This was a year of finishing my catechism classes that culminated into receiving Holy Communion.

It is during this period that I started dreaming of being like my parish priest who was a friend and a father figure,” Opiyo stated.

He joined the University of Nairobi (UoN) to a Bachelors Degree in Broadcast Journalism in 2011. However, he had to drop out due to financial constraints.

Opiyo opted to join the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication (KIMC) in Nairobi which was more affordable.

He revealed that he sold SIM cards on the streets to add to the little money that his father sent him. As such, he was able to complete his course.

He landed a job at NMG in 2017 where he wrote sports stories for Daily Nation and Mwanaspoti.
