Busy City Road Blocked After Protests

Residents of Lower Kabete on Wednesday morning paralysed traffic along the road.

The snarl-up was first reported on Twitter by stranded netizens who use the route trying to access the city.

The residents were protesting over the frequent hit and run accidents along the road with few speed bumps.

On Tuesday night, a man and his grandchild were knocked down along this road and unfortunately died on the spot.

Later in the night, a bodaboda rider was also hit by a vehicle along the same road.

Residents of the area decried the lack of walkways and sufficient speed bumps on the busy road.

Kenya Urban Roads Authority, the body mandated with building roads in urban areas, responded to the tweets by area residents.

The agency urged for patience as it revealed plans to decongest the road by building alternative routes for motorists to access the city.

KURA stated, "Please note walkways and cycle tracks are being constructed, landscaping is set to commence soon. A slip road at Lower Kabete joining the link road through Loresho Ridge is also being constructed. This will enable motorist from Lower Kabete access James Gichuru. Kindly be patient."

Students from the University of Nairobi have previously gone to the streets to protest over the frequent accidents on the road that killed a number of their fellow students.
