Westlands Market Demolition Begins

There was a heavy police presence at Westlands Curio market as the stalls in the area were being demolished on Thursday morning.

The directive came after Kenya Urban Roads Authority's decision to redesign the Lower Kabete and Peponi roads for expansion.

The demolition rendered many of the places inaccessible by vehicles as many roads in the area were cordoned off earlier in the day.

Parklands road from Sarit centre was closed while all traffic to lower Kabete and Peponi road had been diverted to Karuna road.

Motorists were advised to use alternative routes.

The morning incident inconvenienced many people as matatus were not accessing the usual routes.

Passengers using Parklands Roads are alighting at Fedha Plaza, either accessed Westlands business centre via Mpaka Road or had to walk all the way to 9 West, past Sarit Centre and use the route behind Sankara Hotel and exit at Shell Petrol Station.

Nairobi County Deputy Director of Communication Jacob Elkana affirmed that the traders had been given the notice to vacate the area.

"The traders were given a notice and the county government will not relent in bringing down illegal structures that are risking the lives of the residents.

"The county has plans to relocate the traders in state of the art markets," he told Kenyans.co.ke on the phone.

However many of the traders stated that they had been served with the notice to vacate but had not come to an agreement with the authorities.

The traders have promised to move into the new stalls after the demolition is complete lamenting that the building which they had been promised to relocate to had not been completed.
