Massive Snarl-Up on Nairobi-Mombasa Road as Police Teargas Protesters

Massive traffic snarl-up was, on Thursday afternoon, experienced along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway following a protest by residents at Kambu Market.

The demonstrators, who were approximately 200 in number, were reportedly protesting over the planned demolitions of their structures to pave way for the expansion of the highway.

They also took to the major road over rising insecurity cases in the area and were demanding compensation before their structures are brought down.

According to witnesses, police officers arrived at the scene shortly after and lobbed teargas at the protesters who were reportedly residents of Gimo area.

"The situation is bad, so bad," a reporter based in the area told this writer.

This comes just months after the government was forced to close the highway temporarily over elephants invasion.

The highway was blocked at Kibwezi area after stray elephants invaded it thereby impeding transport.

KWS officers moved in swiftly and were seen working towards herding the stray elephants back to Chyulu National Park where they had reportedly escaped from.

The officers commissioned a chopper, at the time, to help in aiding the exercise.
