Sen Omanga Reveals She Was Offered JKIA Tender as Side Hustle

Nominated Senator Millicent Omanga has finally opened up about a tender for Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) she was offered as a side hustle.

Appearing on Betty Kyallo's Upclose show, Omanga intimated that a side business she started while still in campus and her passion for interior design were the contributing factors to her landing the tender estimated to be in millions.

She further stated that she was offered the tender to supply furniture at a terminal in the busy international airport by the Kenya Aiports Authority (KAA).

"Mostly I used to get orders in the hospitality industry like hotels, I have done so many hotels. I even did the interior and furniture for the new terminal at JKIA, terminal A and B," she narrated.

Omanga recounted that she was inspired to start the business during her days as a student of Commerce at the University of Nairobi by the hardship at her home especially after her father passed on.

"I learned the trade through passion and friends. I used to sometimes use my school fees to go to Dubai and get my things for sale.

"I was a first born to my mum and so I was like my mum is straining and was paying for us school fees and my died actually died when we were in school. Were eight of us," she narrated.

In 2018, the outspoken senator revealed that she was picked selling bedsheets by DP William Ruto and subsequently given a post as a director at KenGen.

In her account, the youthful legislator indicated that she was doing a bedsheets retail business when Ruto picked her and consequently changed her life forever.

Addressing the end year party for Pitchface, a company owned by South Mugirango MP Sylvanus Osoro, Omanga recounted the events leading to her surprise job.

"When my appointment came, I had bought 30 bed sheets which I was going to sell.

"I was at Kings Collections shop trying to bargain with the Indian seller so that I could make some profit," she narrated.

Then came a call by former Energy Cabinet Secretary Davies Chirchir, a close ally of DP Ruto.

To her surprise, Chirchir told her "We have an AGM tomorrow for KenGen and you have been chosen to be one of the directors".
