Sonko's Firing Squad Photo Sparks Controversy

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, on Saturday, sparked controversy after posting a photo depicting corrupt government officials lined up in readiness for persecution by a firing squad.

The county head captioned the post, "Corrupt politicians and senior government officials in China ready to be shot dead by a firing squad.

His post elicited reactions from Kenyan online with many calling for the same to be adopted in the country.

"We should be doing this every First Friday of every month pale Uhuru Gardens," one user stated.

Others were of the opinion that Kenya should adopt such measures in battling corruption.

"Instead of borrowing money from China, why can't we borrow some of these practices? This is the only way people will tow the line," another wrote.

"This is what Uhuru should have come with from China even after being denied the loan. Not coming empty-handed," one netizen conveyed.

Even though China has strong anti-corruption laws, the depiction of the picture has been proven to be false.

Several fact-checking sites revealed that the picture was miscaptioned.

A publication by News Mobile Fact Check Bureau on June 20, 2018, showed that the picture was taken on 7 April, 2004 and is actually of convicts at a sentencing rally in the Chinese city of Wenzhou.

The picture which is available on Getty Images, depicts Chinese policemen holding these convicts in front of them. 11 prisoners were later executed that day for various crimes, according to Getty.
