Filthy Kenyan Rivers Make World Headlines

Kenyan rivers have caught the attention of the world by being ranked as the filthiest and the most polluted in Africa and second in the world.

According to a report by BBC, scientists have revealed that the levels of antibiotics in Kenyan rivers were a hundred times higher than the levels deemed safe.

“Once we take antibiotics, it doesn't stop there, we are excreting them into the environment, we’re pouring them into the environment.” explained reports by a scientist.

Among other countries with rivers demonstrating the excessive concentration of antibiotics in the world are Bangladesh and Ghana.

Kenyan rivers, therefore, pose a health threat to its users because of garbage and septic filth dumped in/near them.

However, Governor Mike Sonko has been on the go in restoring the Nairobi river to its initial state. The river, whose water is now grey and filled with litter, has been undergoing cleaning by the Nairobi Regeneration Team.

Factories operating along the river were also given stern warning against discharging untreated waste into the river with strict instructions to only discharge treated water.

Private garbage collectors were also not left behind as they were warned against dumping solid waste along rivers.

Other rivers awaiting cleaning by Governor Sonko’s team are Ngong and Mathare rivers.

Further reports by BBC explained that better sanitation and proper waste management and disposal will reduce the toxicity of rivers.
