EACC's Response on Giving Governors Special Treatment During Arrests

EACC CEO Twalib Mbarak on Wednesday, stated that governors suspected of looting public resources would not be accorded any special treatment during arrests

Addressing journalists, Mbarak stated that those suspected of engaging in corruption would be treated without regard to their social status adding that the only condition to facilitate that would be a change in the law.

"Governors suspected to have looted public funds from the counties will not be accorded special treatment.

"The law is very clear, we don't have white collar suspects and blue collar suspects, criminal suspects are suspects unless the law is amended to distinguish the two," he explained.

He added that "in such an event, white collar suspects would be picked up in air-conditioned Mercedes but as of now if we are picking up a suspect, you'll be treated as one."

The EACC boss noted that the current vehicle was good enough as it was not like a police land rover or a pick-up.

Earlier in May, Council of Governors Chairman Wycliffe Oparanya decried the manner in which the anti-corruption body had been arresting his colleagues.

Oparanya demanded that the EACC sleuths respect the authority, which the governors' office hold in their future arrests.

“We don’t condone corruption and we are ready to fight it, but the way Waititu was arrested, being frog matched, was so inhuman especially someone of his stature,” he retorted.

The Kakamega county boss particularly condemned the detectives over their persistent use of the media for live coverage of such arrests.

The CoG Chairman added that the county executives should not be treated as criminals by investigators before being proved guilty.

“You frog match a governor in front of his constituents and family? it is not fair. You are treating a whole governor as a criminal yet he has not been proved guilty. You are proving him guilty even before he is charged. I find that so bad and they should treat us with some dignity,” he stated.
