Activist and Lawyer Miguna Miguna has angered Kenyans after he gifted a talented homeless woman with a copy of his book.
The woman, who is an exemplary drawer, had added a face of Miguna Miguna to her collection when the activist noticed how good it was.
Taking to social media, Miguna announced that with the art, the 50-year-old woman who is based at Jivanjee gardens, had won herself a copy of his latest book, Treason. An award he christened 'The Revolutionary Solidarity Award 2019.'
"We are pleased to announce that the Jeevanjee Gardens artist whose image appears below has won a free copy of Treason: The Case Against Tyrants & Renegades for her originality and revolutionary consciousness.
"Knowledge is more valuable than money. Knowledge never rots nor gets depleted. Ignorance kills faster than poverty," posted Miguna.
Kenyans were, however, not impressed with the award with some asking if he helped her financially in ways such as purchasing her artwork before giving her the book.
"I wish that you can promote her by buying her artwork," expressed one user.
"Miguna, this lady does not need your book. She is selling her art. Buy it. She can't eat your book!" Stated another.
The activist then defended his award choice explaining that the woman had not specifically asked for monetary rewards and that he had given her free advertisement.
"For those who will be quick to jump in with diversionary comments, please be informed that economic need is not illiteracy nor does it mean one does not appreciate reading, knowledge or that she is not politically conscious. The lady has not begged you for money. She is working hard and earning her keep. Respect her," he lashed back.
"The monetary value of my free advertisement and marketing of her and her products is higher than 'buying' her artwork," he explained.
