Time Moi's Motorcade Was Stoned by Raila Supporters Because of Uhuru

Former President Daniel Arap Moi's motorcade was once stoned by angry supporters of ODM leader Raila  Odinga in Shimakhokho market, Hamisi constituency on July 27, 2002.

The angry supporters pelted stones at Moi's motorcade after he announced that he had chosen the current President Uhuru Kenyatta as his successor.

An autobiography by the opposition leader; The Flame of Freedom indicates that Moi and Raila had merged KANU and NDP parties and during this time, many were of the opinion that the former Head of State would consider him as the successor.

"Moi, as expected, having used me to shore up his failing party, had plans to dump me," Raila noted.

The former chief of staff had kept everyone guessing and a number of people hopeful on who he would choose as his successor.

"I have chosen Uhuru to take over leadership when I leave. This young man has been consulting me on leadership matters.

"I have seen that he is a person who can be guided. If there are others who are chosen, then it will depend on the people," Moi announced prompting the angry supporters to pelt stones at his motorcade.

It is also recorded that the following day, the former commander-in-chief went to Kisumu for an opening of the Agricultural Society of Kenya show where he wanted to speak out about the nomination, but the crowd barred him.

"Hata kama nimesema Uhuru (Even if I've nominated Uhuru)..."Moi stated as the crowd shouted, "Hapana! Hapana!(No !No!) and would not let him finish his statement.

His security detail had to intervene by ordering closure of the gates to avoid more embarrassment.
