A court in Eldoret was the scene of a dramatic discovery on Tuesday as a suspect brought in on record as a female athlete turned out to be a man.
'Sheiys Chepkosgei' had been arraigned at the court for impersonating a female nurse at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) on June 4, 2019, under the alias, Pamela Mulupi.
The lead investigative officer in the peculiar case, Victor Omondi, disclosed that he had arrested the suspect dressed in a full nurses' uniform after a tip-off from other nurses who found 'her' suspicious.
Omondi then made his way to the hospital where Chepkosgei was working under the emergency section and made the arrest.
It was at this point that the suspect's long kept secret was exposed during her time in remand at the Eldoret GK Women prison.
Reports by The Standard divulged the details of a letter signed by the officer in charge of the prison, Margaret Waithera, which claimed that she had stumbled upon the startling fact that the woman brought in as a suspect was actually a man.
'Shieys Chepkosgei' was, in fact, Hillary Kiprotich, despite her birth certificate, passport and national identification card claiming that she was a female.
Kiprotich went on to confess before the court that he was indeed a man but claimed to associate more with the female aspects within him.
Lead investigator Omondi then cast yet another twist into the bizarre case during his testimony, when he narrated how 'Chepkosgei' had participated in numerous marathons across the world in countries such as Malaysia, Morocco, Tanzania and Zambia, and won 3 medals during 'her' career.
When questioned as to the truth behind Omondi's claim, the suspect simply nodded in agreement.
"I was identified as a male but when I became an athlete, I registered myself as a female," he confessed.
The presiding Magistrate, Charles Obulutsa, went on to rule that the suspect be remanded for 10 days pending investigations over her falsified documents.
