Uhuru’s Sister Pursues City Tycoon Over Ksh3M Debt

President Uhuru Kenyatta’s elder sister, Kristina Pratt, has for a second time sued former Karen Country club Captain, Richard Thande, for failing to clear his Ksh3 million debt.

According to Pratt, who filed the case at Milimani Commercial Court in Nairobi, the accused had once again breached a repayment deal.

The businessman, who owed Pratt a soft loan of Ksh5 million, last September paid Ksh2 million and promised to stagger the remaining amount within six months.

However, Thande urged the court to dismiss the suit on grounds that it was time-barred as the Limitation Actions Acts required that contractual dispute be brought to court within six years.

“The defendant will raise a preliminary objection that the entire suit should be struck out on the grounds that it is time-barred,” he was quoted.

The president’s sibling first went to court last year after the businessman failed to honour a repayment deal reached in November 2011 that directed the businessman to make a monthly payment of Ksh 20,000 to clear the debt.

According to Pratt, the defendant had only paid Ksh 20,000 and had refused to settle the remaining Ksh 4.98 million which prompted her to go to court.

Pratt, who has chaired the National Fund for the Disabled of Kenya since 2002, when former President Daniel Arap Moi appointed her to the position, therefore, wants the court to compel Thande to shoulder the costs of the suit.

However, the court documents did not reveal the dealings between Pratt and Thande that led to the cat and mouse chase.
