Raila's Team Pressures Govt to Release Its Ksh4B Payout

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga's Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party is now mounting pressure on the Treasury ministry to release the Ksh4 Billion awarded to it by the court of appeal.

The party had sued the Parliament following arrears that were owed to it and had accrued over the period of four years beginning 2011.`

Daily Nation reported that ODM was calling for the immediate release of the funds which they intended to use for a major revival of its offices in all counties starting next month.

Speaking during a meeting with ODM women leaders from all counties at Hadassa Hotel in Nairobi on Friday, ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna revealed that they were expecting the disbursement by the end of this month.

“We are in the middle of a budget-making process and it is our expectation that this money will be in our bank account by the end of this month as the financial year closes.

"Immediately that happens and after the NEC retreats next week, we should start to go into the counties to carry out the exercise," he told the congregation.

He further added that the Treasury should comply with the directive as per the court which ordered the state to give 0.3 per cent of national revenue to political parties.

“We have reminded Treasury about the court order that requires them to comply with the Political Parties Act. We are looking at the budget proposals and estimates and we want to see the reflection of obedience to the court order,” he continued.

Sifuna also assured the women that once the money lands, the party would also support their pursuits.
