MPs Flown to Enjoy Afcon Matches in Egypt on Taxpayers Cost

20 legislators have traveled to Cairo, Egypt to enjoy the 2019 Afcon games, where Kenya's national team, Harambee Stars will be playing.

Out of the 20, five will be facilitated by the Parliamentary Service Commission including Dan Wanyama (Webuye East), Faith Gitau (Nyandarua Woman Rep), Benard Shinali (Ikolomani), Mary Wamaua (Maragua) and Japheth Mutai (Buret).

The National Assembly clerk, Michael Sialai confirmed that the five would be in Egypt during the duration that the national team, Harambee Stars, will be playing.

“It is true that we are sending the five captains of our Bunge Sports team to Egypt for the Afcon tournament,” stated Sialai.

He, however, noted that the rest of the travelling members would be in Egypt for the entire three weeks of the tournament and at their own cost.

The legislators are each entitled to Ksh 100,000 daily allowance, hence during their 10 days stay, they will be paid Ksh 5 million.

The MPs highlighted that they had gone to Egypt to cheer the national team.

“We are here to cheer and give the team the much-needed morale support as they play,” Wanyama told People Daily.

In 2018, two MPs spent Ksh 2.5million to cater for expenses during the FIFA World Cup in Russia. The Auditor General, Edward Ouko then asked that the Sports Ministry recover the money adding that their expenses were supposed to be catered for by the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC).
