Aisha Jumwa's Remarks on Jailing Pregnant Teenagers Angers Kenyans

Remarks by Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa that pregnant teenagers should be jailed has rubbed many Kenyans the wrong way.

While speaking at the annual Malindi Education celebrations at Barani Secondary School, the legislator stated that arresting the teenage boys who impregnate girls as well as the girls who get pregnant would help curb the menace.

"One problem here is when a teenage girl is impregnated, lawful action is only taken on the boy.

I would like to say that the law is a double sided sword that cuts both ways when the girl accepts to take part in sexual activities, lawful action should be taken on the both of you,"  stated Jumwa.

She went ahead to bash the girl child warning that they should stop pretending to be the victims with claims that they were deceived.

"You pretend to be a little girl claiming that he lied to me, he gave Ksh50, why didn't you turn down the offer or better still, dispose of it in the toilet," she added.

Her sentiments sparked mixed reactions from social media users with many claiming that she went overboard.

Sudi Juma wrote, "It's a pity such a statement can come from her. Anyway, she knows nothing about challenges current parents are facing, she is a failure in that field after being chased away because of tabia mbaya."

James Ouma posted, "Is this the best Malindi would give to the country? What school of thought is she subscribing to!? I think those voters didn't mean well for Kenya at all."

Njeri Wamuathe commented, "So it's a criminal offence for teenagers to get pregnant? So moms and unborn babies should go to jail? Who will help Aisha Jumwa?"

Miguna Miguna wrote, "How will arresting pregnant girls and they boys solve the problem of teen pregnancies? Only grown men who impregnate teenage girls should be arrested for child molestation. Otherwise, the problem is deeper than Jumwa's shallow mind."

Norah Karanja opined, "Honestly, this is a good example of why we should not re-elect some of these leaders. They are doing completely nothing."
