Uhuru Recalls Last Moments With Bob Collymore

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday eulogised former Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore as a great friend and a champion for Kenya.

Speaking at All Saints Cathedral, the head of state recalled the last moments he had with the former telco boss.

Uhuru narrated that while on a visit to Canada, he received a phone call from Collymore at 2am.

"He told me that he'd break a promise he'd made me. He told me he couldn't hang on to the company for a whole year," Uhuru disclosed.

Uhuru later visited Collymore at his house in Kitisuru where they had a conclusive conversation and Bob prepared him for his death.

"I went to his house and he told me he doesn't have much time. My chapter is closed. We spent three, four hours talking about his vision, dream and future of Safaricom.

The president further revealed that he offered to do anything for him, to which Bob responded that all he wanted was for Uhuru to take care of Wambui and the kids adding that he wasn't interested in anything else.

Uhuru described Collymore as a man who truly lived life in service of not just himself, his family but of the society.

"Bob was a man born in Guyana but finally set foot and settled in Kenya 10 years ago. He has made a greater contribution than many who were born, bred and lived in Kenya all their lives," he stated.

Uhuru concluded, "We have lost a great friend, a champion for Kenya, a champion for young people, a champion for the arts, may the almighty rest his soul in eternal peace."

On a light note, referring to an expensive bottle of whisky, Uhuru stated that Peter Kenneth, Joshua Oigara and Bob Collymore's 'boys' owed him "something that had been reserved for a special friend and they will have to pay!"
