There are many instances where Kenyans have witnessed politicians fighting in public and making peace in private, laughing over a cup of tea while their supporters continue attacking one another.
In this instance, these two MPs who come from rival political parties are more than friends in private: they are in-laws.
Kasipul MP Charles Ong'ondo Were from ODM and Kipkelion West MP Hillary Kiplang'at Kosgei from Jubilee are both first-time legislators.
They both serve in the same Environment and Natural Resources Committee in Parliament.
Their first test was during the 2017 election campaigns when their father in law, former Nyanza police boss Kipkemoi Korir died.
During the burial, they both were accompanied by large delegations of supporters. The master of ceremony in his wisdom announced to the mourners the predicament that existed and hence, no political pronouncements were made.
Their second hurdle was when they got elected and Parliament was scheduled to be opened. That time, there was a standoff following the nullification of the presidential election. ODM had vowed it would not recognise the election of President Uhuru Kenyatta.
"Those moments did not separate the closeness we had with Were, we knew that politically we were from different sides.
"But we used to have tea meet and forget whether there is ODM or Jubilee and just become family," Kiplang'at told KTN during an interview.
"Sometimes when I invoke some wordings from baba (Raila Odinga), he smiles but he has never made any bad comments on baba. That is a sign of political maturity and that keeps the family going very well," Were stated about his brother-in-law.
