Details of Uhuru's Surprise Visit to Kisumu Without Raila [VIDEO]

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Saturday made an impromptu visit to Kisumu, on his way back from Tanzania.

He had a brief meeting with the government officials at the Kisumu International Airport, before being driven in a civilian-number-plate vehicle as 10 others towed in his convoy.

He had gone to inspect the progress of the rehabilitation of the Port of Kisumu.

He was accompanied by Transport and Infrastructure CS James Macharia and Education CS George Magoha among other government officials.

Journalists who had access to the port were chased away when the president arrived.

This happened just two days after former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who is out of the country, also visited the facility.

The two leaders appear to be keen on seeing that the Ksh3 billion project is completed in time for its launch.

President Kenyatta and Odinga want the rehabilitation works, which kicked off in May, fast-tracked to meet the August 15 launch deadline, hence, the constant inspection visits in recent days.

A fortnight ago, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i also made a private visit to the port, where he disclosed that CSs would make weekly visits to monitor progress.

President Kenyatta is also expected to inspect the facility once more before the August 15 launch.
