Ruto Explains Defying Uhuru's Order to Stop Campaigns

Deputy President William Ruto, on Sunday, explained why he has defied President Uhuru Kenyatta's order, to stop early campaigns.

The Star reported that Ruto, who was speaking in Eldama Ravine, Baringo County, explained in Kalenjin, that he did not find anything wrong with preparing for the 2022 General Election.

President Kenyatta has in the past, called on Jubilee leaders, to stop making political pronouncements and arrangements for the next polls, and instead, concentrate on delivering the promises they made during the 2017 campaigns.

He argued that Christians prepare for the second coming of Christ, without knowledge of when it would happen. Hence, it shouldn't be a wonder to plan for an election whose date is definite.

“Do you know the date of going to heaven? But you have faith that we are going to heaven? So with this 2022, which we know the date, the week and the month, is there a problem when we plan?” Ruto asked.

“You plan for today and the future … And that is why when we go for these public rallies, they [MPs] say we are in Jubilee and organised for tomorrow. Is there a problem with that?” he was quoted by The Star.

Ruto also argued that, traversing the country launching projects and participating in fundraisers, were among his duties as the DP.

“What you see me doing is discharging the duties of a Deputy President and I'm working hard so that in the days ahead, people will not say there was this Kalenjin who was given a job and he slept on it. That is why I'm working hard,” he explained.

Senate Majority Leader, Kipchumba Murkomen, also supported Ruto claiming that succession politics were inevitable.

"The problem is not with politicians, it is the public that wants to know what the plans are. If you fail to mention 2022 plans, they will send you home so forgive us, even when you meet the president ask him to also forgive us because we have to safeguard our votes.

"Jubilee does not comprise you (Ruto) and the president alone. The party has more than 8 million voters and we are recruiting more so by the next election, we'll have over 10 million supporters," the Senator spoke.
