Nakuru County Minister Impeached Day After Reshuffle

Former Nakuru County Roads Minister, Engineer Lucy Wanjiku Kariuki, was impeached by the Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) of Nakuru, on Tuesday.

The embattled County Executive Committee member, had been transferred from the Department of Infrastructure, to serve in the vacant Youth, Gender, Sports and Social Services docket, on Monday.

Nakuru County Governor, Lee Kinyanjui, authorized the reshuffle, in which his deputy, Dr. Eric Korir, was handed the impeached minister's former post.

An initial move by the MCAs to have the former roads minister ousted from her post on July 12, 2019, was forcefully suspended, after mayhem erupted within the chambers.

Kariuki has been under fire from the County Assembly as it moved a motion to impeach her for failing to deliver on the Boresha Barabara (Improve Roads) and street lighting projects.

Two rival camps in the sharply divided 78-member Assembly, were embroiled in a shouting contest on the floor of the House, forcing Speaker, Joel Maina Kairu, to suspend the motion, ordering for the matter to be re-visited on Tuesday.

Ms Kariuki's critics finally had their day at the chambers, leading to her impeachment.

In her defence, the former executive maintained that her hands were clean of any of the mentioned allegations.

Interestingly, the new docket she had been assigned to, barely a day before her impeachment, had been vacated by Halima Gaba back on November 19, 2018, after she was found guilty of gross misconduct.
