Matiang'i Orders Deportation of 17 Betting Firm Directors

Cabinet Secretary Interior, Fred Matiang'i, on Tuesday, penned deportation orders for 17 betting firm directors.

The freshly signed decree was inclusive of East Europeans, who were deemed to have violated their government-issued work permits.

This came barely two days since President Uhuru Kenyatta reiterated that the government was not going to ease up on their clampdown on betting firms.

Reports by the Daily Nation stated that the deportees had operated contrary to the businesses covered under their original applications.

Matiang'i's latest order follows his directive back on May 20, 2019, authorising the Inspector General, Hillary Mutyambai and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations boss, George Kinoti, to place all betting firm directors under probe.

CS Matiang'i had on July 12, 2019, announced that all betting customers would be granted a maximum of 48 hours to withdraw all their funds from the 27 firms whose licences weren't renewed.

About 5,000 Kenyans and 100 foreigners are employed by the Kenyan betting industry, however, most of the profit is shipped abroad.

“Uncontrolled gambling has reorganized the financial lives of poor Kenyans in very drastic ways. This money is directly pocketed by firms owned by non-Kenyans, a huge chunk of which is transferred to foreign capitals, and very little is left in circulation here in Kenya,” Matiang’i remarked.

President Uhuru had also affirmed that he would not reverse the government's decision to shut down the pay bill and shortcode numbers of the 27 firms until their licenses are renewed.
