Thirdway Alliance Party leader, Ekuru Aukot, has challenged President Uhuru Kenyatta to publicly support his draft Constitution Amendment Bill 2019.
Speaking to journalists on Friday, Aukot stated that President Kenyatta was more likely to achieve his Big 4 Agenda if he supported the 2017 presidential candidate.
"Look no further for any legacy; if you support this Bill, you will be fighting thieves of public money and easily achieve your Big 4 Agenda when we save Kenyans Ksh3.78 trillion," he spoke.
He also welcomed Deputy President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga to support his call.
"The reason I'm emphasising why President Uhuru must support this bill is because it will spur economic development and growth.
"We can even immediately begin to repay our current huge national debt which is at about Ksh6 trillion," he noted.
Aukot also explained that the savings made from cutting the cost of running the government could be used to honour deals with doctors, nurses and teachers.
On Thursday, IEBC announced that it had verified the 1,222,541 signatures that the Thirdway Party had collected, setting the wheels rolling for the imminent constitutional changes.
First in the proposed changes is the reduction of the members of the National Assembly. The party wants the total number of MPs to be 147, down from the current 416.
In the proposal, Aukot and his team want the positions of the woman representatives abolished “to cut the cost of running Parliament to Ksh5 billion annually, down from the current Ksh36.8 billion”.
On the same note, they are proposing the scrapping of the deputy governors position.
The Punguza Mizigo push also seeks to increase the equitable shareable revenue of counties from 15 to 35 per cent of the last audited accounts approved by Parliament.
If the party gets its way, the country could also see the president run for a single term of a maximum of seven years.
In a bid to reduce the national wage bill, the document proposes the abolition of nomination slots for both MCAs and Senators.
