Worshippers Scamper for Safety as Pastor is Clobbered in Church

Members of Nairobi Central Maxwell church, were forced to flee for their lives after violence erupted during their service, on Saturday.

This was the second time in under a week that normal proceedings had been disrupted at the popular church.

GSU and Flying Squad officers were called in to take control of the situation that had gotten out of hand.

Flying Squad chief, Musa Yego, who was among the senior officers called in to handle the matter, threatened to have all parties arrested and locked up if the clashes didn't stop immediately.

The drama erupted after two factions of the church disagreed on the process of deregistering some of the members.

"A church official was reading a list of individuals to be deregistered when a section of the congregation challenged the process, with some occupying the pulpit, in what led to a heated exchange," a church member confessed to the Sunday Nation.

On July 20, 2019, there was a similar fracas, which was captured in videos shared online. The chaos was also due to the deregistration process, or dis-fellowship as it is known in the SDA circles.

Worshippers watched in disbelief as the confrontation ensued, with one of the church elders, Jerry Magutu, claiming that the division in the church had taken a tribal angle.

"The church has been divided as two ethnic groups that have traditionally dominated the membership of the church engage in supremacy battles," he stated.

He went on to add that a certain pastor had introduced a new system of elections that saw the faithful divided along tribal lines.
